Amarillo Venom Announces Maurice Leggett as New Defensive Coordinator

The Amarillo Venom, Amarillo’s premier indoor arena football team, is thrilled to introduce Maurice Leggett as the team’s new Defensive Coordinator. Leggett’s impressive football journey and undeniable passion for the game make him a valuable addition to the Venom family.

Maurice Leggett is a true football champion, boasting two NCAA Division II national titles in 2004 and 2007. His dedication and talent were evident from the start, even after going undrafted in the 2008 NFL Draft. Leggett’s determination led him to sign with the Kansas City Chiefs as an undrafted free agent on May 2, 2008, marking the beginning of a remarkable career.

During his productive rookie season with the Chiefs, Leggett’s outstanding performance earned him the prestigious Mack Lee Hill Award for Most Outstanding Rookie, a remarkable achievement for an undrafted rookie. In November 2009, despite facing a shoulder injury, Leggett’s resilience shone through. He continued to make a significant impact on the field.

Leggett’s journey took him to various NFL teams, including the Detroit Lions, where he showcased his talents until sustaining another season-ending injury. However, his determination remained unwavering.

In 2013, Leggett returned to football, joining the Utah Blaze of the Arena Football League (AFL). His exceptional skills and contributions were evident as he recorded 69 tackles and five interceptions in just 15 games. Leggett’s success led him to sign with the Philadelphia Soul during the offseason.

In 2014, Leggett took his talents north of the border, signing with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the Canadian Football League (CFL). In his first CFL season, Leggett made a significant impact, tying for second in the league with five interceptions, including an impressive three interceptions in a single game. His remarkable achievements led to a three-year contract extension.

Throughout his CFL career, Leggett consistently delivered outstanding performances. He earned recognition as Winnipeg’s top defensive player in 2016 and led the CFL with seven interceptions in the same year. In 2017, he was named a “Shaw CFL Top Performer of the Week” after scoring two touchdowns in a single game, a rare feat for a defensive player.

Leggett’s journey faced adversity when he suffered a torn Achilles tendon in October 2017, ending his season prematurely. However, his determination remained unyielding, and he signed a one-year contract extension with the Bombers in February 2018.

Despite enduring injuries, Leggett’s passion for football continued. He contributed to the Albany Empire’s championship victory in ArenaBowl XXXII, setting an AFL record with a 54-yard interception return for a touchdown.

The versatile athlete also made his mark in the National Arena League (NAL), playing for the Columbus Lions in 2021 and receiving All NAL 2nd team honors in 2022. His illustrious career culminated with a return to the Albany Empire in 2023, where he briefly served as Head Coach before the team’s departure from the NAL.

Maurice Leggett expressed his excitement, stating, “I have had many talks with the team, my family, and God. My destiny has ultimately led me here. I plan on helping this organization fulfill its ultimate potential. I have faith in the leadership of this group to bring home a championship for this 2024 season!”

Robert Reyna, President of the Amarillo Venom, also shared his thoughts on Leggett’s addition, saying, “Mr. Leggett has proven the ability to be a leader in this organization both on and off the field. I have great expectations for this city and this season; The addition of Mr. Leggett will get us one step closer to greatness.”

Maurice Leggett’s extensive experience, dedication, and unwavering commitment to the game make him an invaluable addition to the Amarillo Venom as the new Defensive Coordinator. He looks forward to sharing his knowledge and passion with the team, aiming to create a formidable defense that will make Venom fans proud.
